| Hope you are good Refactual and the summer is treating you well so far!
So an interesting email I seem to be getting in the past 6 months or so is from people who tell me something along the lines of…
“This is it, I am going to QUIT trading football”.
And the main reason is because these people are moving over to trading tennis.
The funny thing is the people who tell me they are going to move trading tennis all fit a similar pattern in that they are/were football lovers primarily, they had little/some success with trading football but something just clicked when they gave tennis trading a go.
Most interesting of all is that they were very rarely tennis fans BEFORE they began dabbling in it.
And I think I can relate since I never in a million years would have thought I would end up trading tennis myself but somehow here we are.
And to be totally honest with you, sometimes during the summer I get similar thoughts and I think maybe I should go to trading tennis full time instead of splitting it with football over the year.
And here are some of the reasons for this:
1 – Less Frustrating
The best part about being involved in a tennis trade is that since the markets move with every point there is lots of scope to be flexible and adjust my position based on what is happening.
If it is not looking good I can take action to lower my exposure and vice versa.
This way I don’t feel totally helpless as I watch my money in the market.
Compare that with football and that feeling of knowing you need a goal within a certain period of time and it can be quite frustrating. Especially watching certain teams deliberately wasting time or feigning injury.
I have been doing it for years and it still frustrates me when you make a good call to get into the market only for a striker to miss a sitter. (Or even worse VAR to reverse the goal as happens these days)
2 – Less time consuming
It is common knowledge that tennis match can go on for hours (some have gone on for days) but your actual trades that you perform should be done and dusted with 10-20 minutes at a time. Some even as quick as 5 minutes.
You are not stuck in the market for hours or (even worse) stuck having to watch the match for 90 minutes waiting for an opportunity that might never arrive. In tennis it is rare to find a match that doesn’t provide some sort of trading chance and even then there are plenty on all day every day.
3 – Less Emotional Attachment
And I think this is a big one.
I think many can go wrong in football trading because they have an emotional attachment but also too much “knowledge” can actually impact your decision making. I don’t even want to think about how many people lost money backing Real Madrid last season simply because they are “Real Madrid” whereas if you simply judged the teams without knowing their names your decisions might be drastically different.
And in tennis you have this opportunity, it is rare to have any sort of emotional attachment to a single tennis player and so you can judge it based on the pure facts without anything else clouding your judgement.
Most of the time you are trading matches with players you have never heard of and this is a GOOD thing.
On that note, I must admit to laying Andy Murray and taking a big loss on the day he won Wimbledon in 2013. In hindsight, that was an emotional call from myself having never been alive to witness a Brit win Wimbledon and I was so “sure” he would choke.
Bad move since he was brilliant that day.
Either way, it really doesn’t surprise me when I get emails from my subscribers telling me they are moving over to trading tennis.
Nobody knows the true numbers but I would guess there are more “full timers” doing tennis and cricket than doing football these days. Just look at the money in the markets on an average match to get an idea of what is going on.
I do believe that once you know how to actually trade it then the learning curve for tennis is less harsh than it can be for football.
