Grocery market coming to Denver’s Sun Valley neighborhood with federal funding

A small food market will open in Sun Valley, the neighborhood with one of Denver’s greatest concentrations of poverty, with government funding. Denver Housing Authority plans to open the GROW Market in September 2020 at West 10th Avenue and Decatur Street. It will include basic goods and groceries, along with fresh produce from local organic providers and an on-site garden, Andrew Kenney reports.
Despite fewer arrests, Arapahoe County jail remains overcrowded. The sheriff has a $462M solution that could mean a tax hike.
A deputy works in a pod at Arapahoe County Detention Center, where up to three inmates share a cell, in Centennial on June 20, 2019. New Arapahoe County Sheriff Tyler Brown is saying the county needs to build a new detention facility because of crowding and other maintenance issues. (RJ Sangosti, The Denver Post)
“The space that we need isn’t more beds, it’s processing and programming. We could be doing so much more.”
Vince Line, detention bureau chief for the sheriff’s office
For a decade, the sheriff’s office has repaired and retrofitted the jail to expand its capacity. But there are no more efficiencies to be made, Brown said. That’s why he wants a new $462 million jail that will increase the number of beds by 200 and create more space for services meant to limit the number of inmates who set foot in the jail in the first place, Elise Schmelzer reports.
By the Numbers
